Universal car mounts are a dime a dozen and can easily be picked up for less than Php200. However, I’ve gone through a couple of them already and if you’re familiar with cheap car mounts, you’ll know how easily they can be knocked off of your windshield after braking a little hard. I’m also pretty sure some of you have watched in horror as your multi-thousand peso smartphone tumbled into your dash, then quickly checking it for any damage.
As a guy who rarely invests in any other car accessory, I was happy to get the Belkin Car Universal Mount and test it with my own phone. After all, I’d been wondering for a while if spending more than a thousand bucks on a car mount would be worth it.
Design
The Belkin Car Universal Mount is constructed from solid plastic that’s noticeably more durable than anything I’ve bought from CDR-King.
Rather than featuring a lever-based lock, the Belkin Car Universal Mount features a rotating lock to achieve a grip on your windshield. Also, if you’d rather not have your smartphone suspended inside your car, you could mount the Car Universal Mount to your dashboard instead, thanks to its included dashboard adapter.
The Belkin Car Universal Mount is capable of accommodating smartphones that are up to 6 inches in size. Your iPhone 6 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus isn’t going to be a problem, and if you’re in doubt, there’s a helpful measurement diagram on the box to help you check if your over-sized phablet can still fit.
In addition to being able to hold some of the largest phones out there, you can tilt and rotate the holder to achieve the best possible viewing angle without having to detach it from your windshield or dashboard.
So Should You Buy the Belkin Car Universal Mount?
When it comes to protecting their smartphones, most people tend to think of protective cases, covers and screen protectors. However, car accessories also serve as protection for your smartphone. In the case of the Belkin Car Universal Mount, it secures your phone in place while providing you quick access.
It does a lot of things right: the holder is well-padded, the grip is rock-solid, and there’s even a simple cable management system so you don’t end up with a dangling charging cable too close to your face. The real bonus for me though is the included dashboard adapter. It gives you a lot more options as to where you can mount your phone, even if the surface isn’t necessarily flat or car mount friendly!
