Cherry Mobile Titan: See the Bigger Picture

A couple of days ago, Cherry Mobile launched two of the hottest new Android smartphones in the Philippine market. The Cherry Mobile Flare is likely to be more appealing to the masses because you get a dual core CPU and 4 inch IPS screen for just Php3,999. However, it is the Cherry Mobile W500 Titan that appeals to me more because of its 5″ capacitive screen that is obviously better for media consumption.

Smaller phones might be more pocketable, but when it comes to touchscreen phones, bigger screens provide a ton of benefits. First, it will be easier to compose text messages, emails and notes. On a screen as big as the Cherry Mobile Titan’s, you’ll easily be able to type away at the onscreen QWERTY-keyboard, even in portrait mode. Second, you’ll also have a better time watching movies or playing games on large screens. For example, my W100 with its 3.5″ capacitive IPS screen is pretty good at playing video, and I watch movies on it all the time when I’m on a commute. However, the viewing experience certainly won’t compare to watching videos on the Titan with its larger screen and better resolution. Heck, with a screen that large, you can even watch comfortably enough with friends without having to strain your necks to get a good view of the screen. Finally, browsing the internet and checking in on your favorite social networks on a screen as large as the Titan’s will also offer a better experience. Instead of just viewing 3 or 4 lines of text on a 3″ screen, you can fit much more lines of text and images so you can spend more time enjoying the actual content instead of endlessly scrolling through it.

There’s a lot to love about the Cherry Mobile Titan, and it’s not just about the screen. In addition to the 5″ 800 x 480 capacitive display, you’re also getting a dual core 1GHz MediaTek MT6577 CPU, 512Mb of RAM, and 4Gb of internal storage, all while launching with ICS 4.0 out of the box. Another thing I like is that the Titan makes no compromises in terms of wireless connectivity. You get the standard WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and HSPA+ with up to 21Mbps mobile internet speeds. To top it all off, you even get dual SIM standby functionality!

Obviously, the Cherry Mobile Titan will draw a lot of comparisons to phones like the Galaxy Note and Note 2, however it’s actually more similar to the Lenovo S880. Both are virtually the same when it comes to specs, save for one key point. The Cherry Mobile Titan comes with a dual core Mediatek CPU while the Lenovo S880’s CPU only runs on a 1GHz single core chip. When you consider that the S880 retails for Php14,999 while the Cherry Mobile Titan only sells for Php6,499, the Titan’s appeal shoots up to a whole other level.
