Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z Specs, Price and Availability

Cherry Mobile has been releasing increasingly higher end phones over the past year, however when compared to the best from the international brands, phones like the Omega HD 2.0 and Blaze 2.0 are technically just midrange. Well last night, the local phone brand outed not, one, not two, but four premiere Android smartphones under the Cosmos series. Of the four, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z deserves the most attention.

First Full HD Display on a Locally-branded Phone

The most obvious reason is because it is the first locally-branded smartphone to sport a Full HD display. You’re getting an IPS panel with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, which equates to an eye-bleeding 441ppi. You would have to spend anywhere from Php25k to Php35k on something like the Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z or Oppo Find 5 to get that kind of screen if you were to buy from an international brand. Simply put, this is one of the best screens you can get, whether you’re buying local or international. It’s even protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2, which is a scratch- and shatter-resistant protective glass.

CPU/GPU and Performance

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z features a 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6589T processor. Note that there’s a “T” at the end of that model number, as opposed to the MT6589 that a lot of the locally-branded quad core phones have. In case you don’t know the difference, “T” stands for Turbo and indicates that the 1.5GHz MT6589T is clocked faster compared to the regular variant of the MT6589, which is only clocked at 1.2GHz.

Both variants also use the same PowerVR 544MP GPU, however, the one on the MT6589T is clocked faster at 357MHz compared to the regular MT6589 that is only clocked at 286MHz. In reality though, you might not see that much of a performance boost compared to something like the Omega HD 2.0. Why? Because the MT6589T will have to process twice as much graphics information on the Cosmos Z as the MT6589 on the Omega HD 2.0 due to its high resolution. In effect, the added boost to processing power should be just enough to make sure the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z performs smoothly despite having more pixels to process.

The capable MT6589T is coupled with 1Gb of RAM, which is just right for a Jelly Bean phone. I would have preferred 1.5Gb or 2Gb of RAM, but hey, it comes with a frigging Full HD screen so I’ll let that pass. It’s not like any other locally-branded phone offers more than 1Gb of RAM anyway.

Cameras

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z sports dual cameras: an 18mp BSI autofocus rear-facing shooter and an 8mp front-facing shooter. While I’m skeptical of why you would even need to shoot 18mp images, it’s nice to have that capability. The sensor is quite good too. The shots from the main camera were at least as good as from my old Galaxy Note. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to transfer them over, which is a shame, because I had a lot of nice shots of the models 😉

In case you like taking a lot of selfies, the Cosmos Z should satisfy. The front-facing camera is also uses a BSI sensor, although it’s just an 8mp shooter. It’s also just a fixed focus lens, but it’s not like you’re going to use it for anything other than Facebook profile pics or video chat sessions over Skype.

Storage

In terms of internal storage, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z has 8Gb worth of it. That’s not bad for a locally-branded phone, but the Cosmos S and X2 both come with 16Gb of storage. Thankfully, I’ve confirmed that the storage is expandable up to 32Gb via micro SD. Actually, all four Cherry Mobile Cosmos phones have micro SD slots all Cherry Mobile Cosmos models have micro SD slots except for the Cosmos S.

Battery

The Cosmos Z is equipped with a 2,000mAh battery, which is actually smaller than the 2,100mAh battery of my Omega HD 2.0. With a faster CPU/GPU combo and more pixels to process compared to the Omega HD 2.0, I expect that battery life will be comparatively worse.

Special Features

Naturally, it isn’t just about the specs. The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z supports Miracast Wireless Display, which is like a wireless TV-out. The required Miracast adapter will probably be sold separately though.

Pricing and Availability

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z is expected to retail at Php11,999. For a phone that features a very capable CPU/GPU combo, not to mention that eye-bleedingly gorgeous 5 inch Full HD IPS screen, the price is quite attractive. However, at that price, most people will start to consider more established brands like Samsung, Apple or LG. No way of finding out how successful the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z will be when it starts rolling out late August early September, but I expect it to be a hit.

Update: I just got a tip that the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z might be the same OEM device as the Koobee Max. Looking at the the specs and appearance of both phones, I’d say it’s a match. Thanks for the tip, Reynaldo 🙂
