The Nokia 8 is Sleek, Striking, and Comes in Copper

Back before smartphones, Nokia was the king of the mobile phone market. Had a few things gone differently, the Finnish brand might still have been at the top. Alas, the history books have been written, but that doesn’t mean the new ownership can’t still forge a bright future for the once undisputed king of mobile.

Fast forward to today and Nokia, now owned by HMD Global, has just announced their first flagship. The all new Nokia 8 picks things up as if its brand had never been close to extinction. It features a simple, sleek body, aluminum frame, and interesting color variants: Steel, Tempered Blue, Polished Blue, and perhaps the most striking, Polished Copper.

Underneath its 5.3 inch QHD display beats the heart of a Snapdragon 835 chipset. Combined with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Most importantly, instead of Windows Phone, it runs Android 7.1 Nougat, allowing it to actually compete with other flagships from the likes of Apple, Samsung, LG and more.

While the Nokia 8 has an understated design, it does have a unique feature of sorts worth talking about. Dual cameras are hardly anything new these days, but the setup on the Nokia 8 uses Carl Zeiss optics. It’s composed of two 13mp cameras, one with a color sensor and the other with a monochrome sensor. Similar to Huawei P9 and P10 that feature Leica-engineered optics, it allows the handset to take sharper and more vivid photos while opening up possibilities like enhanced depth of field and background-foreground refocusing.

The Nokia 8 is due to be rolled out globally some time in September and currently has a suggested price of 599 Euros (roughly Php36k as of writing). Now that HMD-owned Nokia has a local presence, we should expect the new flagship to make it to our shores around the same time as well.
