Starmobile Diamond D1 Phablet Announced, Touts Amazing Battery Life

In case you missed it, Starmobile recently announced a new phablet to their Diamond series, the Diamond V1. What’s different about the Starmobile Diamond V1 touts an impressive 3,000mAh battery and doesn’t try to compete too much with higher specs. That’s on top of having fairly decent internals and a very affordable price tag of Php7,999.

The key specs are solid but not completely impressive. The Starmobile Diamond V1 features a 5 inch FWVGA screen and a 1.2GHz MT6589M SoC. Keep in mind that this is the “M” variant of the MT6589 lineup that features an underclocked PowerVR SGX 544 CPU at 156MHz down from 286MHz that the regular variant is clocked at. While this would mean that the graphics performance won’t be as good, it also means that it won’t consume as much power.

Also, because the screen only has a resolution of FWVGA, it won’t be as sharp as the HD screens of more premium local phablets. However, that also means the already low power-consuming GPU will have a lighter load to process. The end result is the same graphics performance at a lower resolution and lower power consumption.

Of course, it’s not all about being battery-efficient as the Diamond D1 also sports one of the best camera setups I’ve seen at this price point. Both the 8mp front and 12mp back cameras use BSI sensors, but they’ also both use autofocus lens. If you’ve ever tried some of the other local phones with front cameras that use BSI sensors, the images still might not be that good because the lenses they use have a fixed focus point. An autofocus lens on the front camera means it can achieve the same quality images as the back camera.

The rest of the specs are pretty standard. It supports up to 3.5G/HSPA+ mobile data speeds, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS with A-GPS. Think this might be on your Christmas wish list?
