MyPhone Rio Fun Initial Review: First Impressions and Benchmark Scores!

The Rio lineup of phones has been met with a lot of success, with the first two models confirmed to have already been sold out. While stocks are expected to be replenished next month, MyPhone has announced the arrival of another Rio to look forward to: the MyPhone Rio Fun. The MyPhone Rio Fun may not be a beast when it comes to specs, but it is the first smartphone that I know of that has come in at under Php3k.

MyPhone Rio Fun Box Front and Back

Luckily, I was able to win a unit at yesterday’s press conference that I can review. While the full review won’t be until after a week from now, here’s a quick unboxing and my first impressions after playing around with the Rio Fun for a day.

Design

The Rio Fun bears more of a resemblance to the Rio Lite than the original Rio. The back case doesn’t extend all the way over the edges just like the Rio Lite. However, the camera placement is more akin to the original Rio, albeit with a rounded camera rather than a squarish one.

Features

The MyPhone Rio Fun sports a 5 inch FWVGA TFT screen with a resolution of 480 x 854, giving it a pixel density of 196ppi. Under the hood is a 1.3GHz dual core MediaTek MT6572 SoC coupled with a Mali 400 GPU. It also has 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, a 3.2mp rear-facing camera with LED flash and a VGA front camera.  It’s powered by a 1,800mAh battery and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Unfortunately, it lacks 2G connectivity, which means unless you do anything more than check IMs and emails on mobile data, you’re in for a bad time.

Benchmark Scores

I ran the MyPhone Rio Fun through Antutu, Quadrant and Nenamark to help give you guys an idea of the phone’s performance. Here are the scores for you to check out 🙂

First Impressions

The MyPhone Rio Fun is fairly impressive considering it only retails for a little less than Php3k. No other phone in its price point features a 5 inch screen and the design is actually quite appealing for high schoolers and college students. The limited storage and 2G connectivity are a letdown, but if you prefer the benefits of a large screen and don’t want to pay too much, the Rio Fun is shaping up to be a decent choice.

I’ll be playing around with this phone for the next week to see what more I can learn about it before publishing the full review. If there’s anything you’d like me to test on the MyPhone Rio Fun, please let me know in the comments below 🙂
