Cherry Mobile Ace: First Firefox Smartphone in the Philippines and SEA

Cherry Mobile Ace

When it comes to tech news, the Philippines is often on the tail-end of things. However, just a while ago, folks from Mozilla and Cherry Mobile held a small media event to introduce the Cherry Mobile Ace, the first Firefox smartphone in Southeast Asia. And it’s launching in the Philippines!

Lockscreen

The Cherry Mobile Ace is about as entry level as it gets, sporting a 3.5 inch HVGA touchscreen, 1GHz single core Spreadtrum processor, 128MB RAM and 256MB internal storage. However, it does benefit from the lightweight Firefox OS and its open platform.

Wide Angle

Just how lightweight is Firefox OS? Just try getting the current iteration of Android to run on 128MB RAM. There’s still a long way to go though before Firefox OS can hold its own against the likes of Android, iOS, or even Windows Phone so don’t expect have a crap-ton of apps to choose from for now. Still, Firefox OS already comes with all the essentials built-in and the Firefox marketplace has a small selection for your to expand the functionality of your Firefox smartphone.

Back

The Cherry Mobile Ace has an SRP of Php1,499, which is already an awesome price point for a smartphone, however basic it might be. But from December 13 to 15, Cherry Mobile will be offering it at just Php999. That’s Php500 of the sticker price! So do you think the Cherry Mobile Ace is an awesome start for Firefox OS? Let me know in the comments 🙂
