Kata i2 Quad Core Phablet Launches This Saturday With 30% Discount

Kata i2 Launch Invitation

Looking for a quad core phablet on the cheap? You guys might want to check out the Kata i2 that’s being launched on November 16 (this Saturday as of writing) at a 30% discount (Php7,699 down from Php10,999). So what are you getting for your hard earned moolah?

The Kata i2 features a 5 inch qHD IPS screen, which will give you a pixel density of 220ppi. It’s also equipped with a 1.2GHz quad core processor coupled with 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. As for the imaging side, the i2 comes equipped with dual cameras (8mp autofocus rear, 2mp fixed focus front). Battery life should be acceptable with a capacity of 2,200mAh and it runs the fairly recent Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Kata i2 Specs

  • 5″ qHD IPS display (540 x 960 resolution, 220ppi)
  • 1.2GHz quad core MT6589 processor
  • PowerVR SGX 544 GPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 8mp autofocus rear-facing camera
  • 2mp fixed-focus front camera
  • 3.5G/HSPA+
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • WiFi b/g/n
  • Dimensions: 143.3 x 71.8 x 9.4mm
  • Weight: 150g
  • Price: Php7,699 introductory price (Php10,999 SRP)

Pros

  • The 16GB internal storage is pretty massive for the price. Typically, you would only get 4GB, which gets reduced even further since the Android OS eats a good chunk of that up. No need to have to buy a micro SD card right after getting the Kata i2.
  • Battery life should be more than decent. Many 5 inch HD screens are equipped with 2,000mAh batteries and can last around 15-20 hours on normal usage. Since the Kata i2 has a lower resolution screen, it should last even longer on a full charge.
  • The introductory price is pretty affordable. The internal storage alone gives it great value for money.

Cons

  • The resolution is a bit of a disappointment. Many of the premium phablets from other local brands sport HD screens while the Kata i2 only sports a qHD screen. That’s a noticeable difference in screen clarity. 220ppi is still acceptable, but if it does ever go up to its SRP of Php10,999, people will start expecting a better screen at that price.
  • SRP is pretty steep considering the pedestrian specs. Yes, the 16GB storage is probably what’s driving the price up, but the 8mp camera is sub-par compared to other local phablets at the same price.

Impressions

Personally, I think the Kata i2 is still a solid phone and 16GB of storage is a killer selling point. However, if it ever goes back up to SRP, it might have a tough time competing in the market.
