Bang for buck 4G smartphones are becoming something of a norm these days, and it’s always nice whenever OEMs keep pushing the boundaries of what a price point should offer. The newly announced Doogee X5 Pro is one such smartphone. You get a 5 inch HD IPS display, a quad core MT6735 processor by MediaTek, 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Pricing hasn’t been officially revealed yet, but some online stores are already offering it on pre-sale with a supposed 30% discount for $79.99.
The design is fairly well thought out and tries not to be too generic. The style is minimalistic and you’ve got a choice between black or white variants. One thing I appreciate is the slip-resistant shell, which sports a rubberized finish that’s also resistant to scratches. It was also crafted with the help of CNC engraving, which is a precision method for removing any imperfections, giving the polycarbonate body a more premium look and feel.
The MediaTek MT6735 SoC may not be the most powerful in the chip-maker’s lineup, but it’s surprisingly capable, allowing phones to score roughly 30,000 points in Antutu. That’s about as good as the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is still no slouch these days. And with its Mali 720 GPU and 2GB RAM, the Doogee X5 Pro should deliver surprising performance for what amounts to an entry-level 4G smartphone.
The Doogee X5 Pro is set to be released internationally by September 30, but since the phone maker doesn’t have an official presence here, the only way to get it is to either buy it through international online stores or pray that a local brand licenses the phone for a local release under a different name.
