Up until now, the Lumia Pureview series, specifically the Lumia 1020 has been the go to handset if you wanted the best camera you can get on a smartphone. That may be set to change now that the ASUS ZenFone Zoom has been announced. The ASUS ZenFone Zoom features a 5.5″ Full HD display, a 64-bit Intel Z3580 processor, 4GB RAM and up to 128GB for internal storage. Yet as great as those specs are, it’s the camera that’s the main draw of the new ZenFone variant.
Although the ZenFone Zoom’s 13mp camera doesn’t hold a candle to the Lumia 1020’s 38mp monster of a sensor, the Zoom does feature something that even the Lumia 1020 doesn’t have: optical zoom. The ZenFone Zoom’s camera comes with 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, as well as laser-guided autofocus. You can even go into manual mode where you have full control over things like shutter speed and ISO.
Unfortunately, unlike the ZenFone 2, ASUS is being a little shy regarding news of the ZenFone Zoom’s availability. It’s expected to be released into the market sometime in the Q2 of 2015,which is still a ways away. Although they weren’t specific about pricing, it will likely come in at around $400 or about Php17.6k after straight conversion. That’s a little steep for something that bears the ZenFone brand, but considering the hardware that’s been slapped into the ASUS ZenFone Zoom, I’m disappointed but not too surprised.
