All hail the Flare S series. It’s a series that’s had its ups and downs, never perfect, but always at a budget that made it one of the most competitive series in recent years. Now though, it’s looking like it might not be seeing its annual refresh. We suspected it with the release of the gaming oriented Cherry Mobile Aqua S9 Max. It was the signal of something new. Now, with the entry-level Cherry Mobile Aqua S9 being announced, it’s looking to be a little more real.

Alas, the Flare S series had a good run. In its place, the Aqua S9 with a budget price tag of Php3,999 rises in its ashes. Does this new phone deserve to replace the venerable Flare S? Here’s what you’re getting for the money.

Alas, there’s no info on the screen size yet, though it looks to have a teardrop notch screen based on the official product renders. The back cover also takes a trendy queue from competitors, making it one attractive handset considering the price, at least if the product photos are to be believed.

All in all, it looks to be a fairly good handset for the price, though we’ll have a better idea once we get more details on the display and the actual SoC used. Stay tuned!

Back when I started MobileTechPinoy in 2012, phablets weren't a thing yet. I enjoyed the stares I got from iPhone owners whenever I whipped out my Samsung Galaxy Note at the time. I'm much more budget-conscious these days though and am perfectly fine with using phones from any of our locally brands.
