SKK Platinum Spotted in the Wild: 5 Inch HD Screen and Quad Core CPU | Update: Price and Antutu Benchmarks!

SKK Mobile is an emerging local brand that has been trying to break into the Philippine budget smartphone segment. They already have a quad core model in the form of the SKK Silver, which has a 5.7 inch screen, however it appears that they have another quad core Android smartphone that they’ll be releasing soon, this one with a more pocketable 5 inch HD screen. I had already spoken with a contact from SKK Mobile who told me there was an upcoming model by the name of the SKK Platinum, however I had yet to see any pics of it. That is, until Edriangelo Paule, a past tipster for MobileTechPinoy, spotted an unknown phone on display at SKK Mobile SM North Edsa.

Edriangelo managed to snap a few more photos of the SKK Platinum and the device manages to look quite attractive in them. If I were to be the judge, it’s reminiscent of HTC’s design, which is a bit ironic considering the UI is a ripoff of Samsung’s TouchWiz.

At the time that this photo was taken, even the store attendants didn’t know the name or price of this phone on display, but SKK Mobile has confirmed that it is indeed the SKK Platinum. In addition to sporting a 5 inch HD screen and quad core CPU, they also revealed that it would come with 8Gb internal storage, 1Gb RAM and Android 4.2 out of the box.

The specs are looking promising and hopefully it won’t be too pricey when it comes out. At least it should cost less than the OPlus 8.15, which sports similar specs. I’ll update you guys on the specs, pricing and availability as soon as the information becomes available.

Thanks Edriangelo!

[Update 6/16/2013 @ 12:40] Details have been scarce since we first heard of the SKK Platinum, but now we have a couple of pieces of information, one from an official source and one from an anonymous tipster. First is that SKK Mobile has officially launched the SKK Platinum at an SRP of Php9,999. It’s a little steep, but the specs justify it to some extent. It should start rolling out to stores soon if it isn’t available already.

The juicier bit of information is through an admin of one of the Facebook groups who preferred to stay anonymous and gave me detailed system information of the SKK Platinum and even Antutu Benchmark results. It’s not often we get these sorts of details so soon after we learn about a new phone so this one takes the cake. Anyway, check out the photos below.

The Antutu scores and framerates are on par with other locally-branded quad core devices from brands like MyPhone, Cherry Mobile and OPlus. That shouldn’t come as a surprise since most of them are based on the same MediaTek MT6589 chipset. Here, more detailed specs are revealed to give us a better idea of what kind of performance and user experience to expect from the SKK Platinum.

At this point, it seems like we know all that there needs to be known about the SKK Platinum short of a full review. At Php9,999, it’s more expensive than the Cherry Mobile Omega HD 2.0 and MyPhone A919i Duo that it would immediately be competing with. However, it’s also cheaper than the OPlus 8.15 while sporting the exact same specs save for the better camera (12.6mp vs 8mp). There’s no telling how well the SKK Platinum will compete in the market, but it does have everything it needs to have a fighting chance.
