There are smartphones and tablets, and there’s the ambiguous device category that sits right in between. Just how big can a phablet become before you start calling it a tablet? Well, the newly announced PiPo T5 is pushing against those boundaries, becoming one of the largest phablets around with its 6.95 inch screen.
Another interesting aesthetic feaure is that the PiPo T5 is partially clad in faux leather. You’ll find that oh so premium-feeling material on the back toward the the top and bottom of the device. It’s an interesting way of doing things and might appeal to the premium effect that it portrays.
The device is pretty large, measuring 188.5 x 101.6 x 8.5mm. The screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600, which isn’t that sharp and will come off as a bit wide in landscape orientation but should be perfect for movies. Under the hood runs a 1.3GHz quad core MediaTek MT8382 processor coupled with 1GB ROM. There’s 16GB of onboard storage, which is thankfully expandable via micro SD. Other specs include a 5mp/2mp dual camera setup, HSPA+, WiFi and GPS connectivity. It’s also powered by a 2,900mAh battery, which is a bit on the smallish side for a device of this size.
Now, PiPo doesn’t have an official presence here as most of their stuff is imported by a number of small-time sellers based in Divisoria, Greenhills and the like. However, Cherry Mobile has been known to tap them as an ODM (official device manufacturer). So there’s at least a small chance that we might see the PiPo T5 under a different name.
In China, the T5 retails for the equivalent of about Php3.5k. It’s unlikely it will retain that price point if it ever gets here, but it’s hard to imagine the PiPo T5 going over the Php5k mark if it does 🙂
