Gionee is known to push for more than just specs in the midrange category, often resulting in some pricier phones versus the competition. The just-revealed Gionee M2017 is worth overlooking what is sure to be a higher than comfortable price tag considering it packs 7,000mAh of battery power. Not only that, but it also comes with dual cameras and a sophisticated design that differs from a lot of smartphones we’ve already seen.
The standard retail model is already quite premium on its own, sporting a 5.7 inch QHD AMOLED display with curved edges and a pixel density of 518ppi that’s so sharp it’ll make your eyes bleed (okay, not really). If you’re willing to shell out more though, you can get the version with Italian custom alligator leather. PETA is not amused, but that’s one heck of a selling point.
Back to that massive 7000mAh battery though: it’s actually composed of two 3,500mAh batteries crammed into the M2017’s frame. Gionee claims that the M2017 will be able to last 26 hours on continuous video playback. It also supports Quick Charge 3.0 and comes with a faster USB Type-C port.
The rest of the phone is no letdown. Aside from the curved QHD AMOLED display it comes with a whopping 6GB of RAM and a choice between 128GB or 256GB of storage. It’s rear camera setup is pretty interesting as it features dual cameras with 13mp and 12mp sensors.
As awesome as it is though, the Gionee M2017 isn’t perfect. Its Snapdragon 653 SoC might seem a bit underpowered considering the QHD screen it will need to drive. Also, despite its relatively thick 10.78mm frame, it doesn’t have a microSD card slot or even a 3.5mm headset jack.
The M2017 is limited to a Chinese release only for now and will start at CNY 6,999 (about Php50k) for the 128GB version. If you like your accessories in leather though, the Italian custom alligator leather version with 256GB of storage will set you back CNY 16,999 (about Php121.4k). Why the heck not?
